Back to School in Sucre

It’s been a while! We’ve been having lots of adventures here in Bolivia. I want to tell you about the week we spent in Spanish school in Sucre.

We arrived on a night bus really early in the morning at 5 a.m. John thought it was a good idea to walk through the dark alleyways to our accommodation. Luckily we were staying in a nice apartment about 20 minutes (which felt like a 40 min) walk away. The lovely owner, Ignacio, met us and let us in. He was so kind and brought us a delicious box of chocolates during our stay.

I was pretty excited about Spanish school but William was not. He did have a great attitude though. Spanish school had the nicest teachers and super fun activities including going to the market to learn words for fruits and going to a cooking class. My mom and I learned how to make papas rellenas from a nice Bolivian lady, Marlene. Everyone we met in Sucre was really kind and friendly.

William and I also got to go into a school to meet children who were learning English. They spoke really good English and we had a bunch of things in common including favorite TV shows, movies, games, snacks and drinks. We loved that they gave us recommendations for good restaurants in town.

Talking about food….every day after school we had a set lunch at a local restaurant which always included a soup and main course, and sometimes a drink and dessert, for less than $5. Trust me, Menu Del Dias are excellent!

Y’all know I don’t like museums much but I found Casa de Libertad pretty cool. It was in a beautiful old building which was the residence of Simon Bolivar who fought for independence from the Spanish.

Then on our last day in Sucre we took a taxi to the Parque Cretaceo to see real life dinosaur footprints. This park was crazy. You can see the footprints really clearly on the side of this big hill. There were also lifesize models which were super fun to stand under.

The only bad thing about Sucre was the pollution from lots of old buses and cars which made it hard to breathe. But I know you guys love it when we have some bad incidents and everything does not go ok. Don’t worry, the next post will have lots of those stories – get ready to feel our misery.

Miss you all and can’t wait to see you when we get home. Love, Madeleine

Did you see anything to do with the coup attempt in Boliva? Were you in Peru yet when they had an earthquake? Where was the picture of you all in the cool knit caps and snow? Love you all and look forward to your communications. June

We are a family of 4, my parents met traveling and later had kids and decided that they would take us traveling around the world too! And that’s how it all started!
