Mulu National Park (Part 1)

Can I just start by telling you how tiny the airplane was?! It was only a 20 minute flight from Miri to Mulu National Park in Borneo. Miri was the place that we went to between Kuala Lumpur and the jungle. I would not recommend going to Miri because the air quality was terrible and you could barely breathe cause of the fires. It was so hot – more hot than most of the other places we’ve gone to.

Once we arrived in Mulu, we got out of the plane and walked over to the tiniest airport I have ever been to! There was no passport clearance or immigration or anything! We just walked out of there. You’re probably thinking I’ll say “then we got an uber and got to our hotel”. NO. THAT IS WRONG. I wish that’s how it went, but actually we walked from the airport to our accommodation. For 25 minutes. Not too long, but in the heat it feels like 4 hours.

Then the accommodation. It was not a hotel, not a motel, between a cabin and a hut. No need to say more on that subject.

Now the restaurant, It was very nice for being in the middle of a jungle, the food was nice, and the drinks were the same sodas and stuff like that. But I have to share that with every meal we ordered one satay. It’s grilled chicken on a stick, a peanut sauce, a ball of rice, and a delicious salad. My dad has put details on the food page.

When we got back from our first dinner, we saw a lizard scurry under one of the beds. Then that contributed to me barely sleeping that night because I was so freaked out by all the jungle noises.

Some sort of bug🪲
Gecko🦎
Stick Insect
Hairy Caterpillar – my mom is actually allergic to these🤣

The next day was my brother’s birthday, the real reason we actually came to the jungle, was because it was William’s birthday. He decided to go to some caves!

But on the first day, we went on a tour with 4 other people, it was a canopy walk over the jungle. Yall can probably tell that I don’t like the jungle, but this was awesome! If you don’t like heights, or if you do have a fear of falling, this is definitely not for you.

This is insanely high and is held together by wood planks, rope, and tape. I personally loved this because I love heights, but my mom on the other hand, she’s not so keen on heights. So you can imagine how that went.

Canopy Walk

Oh! Funny story! My dad wanted to go on a walk to the waterfall on the way back. We said “sure”, so we decided to head into the mud trail. We got about 1/4 of the way there, and my mom screamed! She explained that there was a, and I quote, “White Leach.” We ran out of there terrified! By the way, when we checked in, the front office told us that there were “no leaches”, and for the record, we searched it up, there is no such thing as a white leach.

Lastly, I have to tell you about the humidity and mosquito bites! They were bad! Really bad! It was 90 Fahrenheit, always! And the bugs thought that we were some kind of amazing food, because I am now covered in little red dots, and they’re pretty itchy!

I just wanted to show you this! Funny looking, right!?

Thank you so much for reading, if you have any questions, please put them in the comments, and I’ll try to answer them! Miss you all very much! Part 2 will come shortly!

Love,                                                                         Madeleine

How did you know it was a gecko as opposed to any other lizard? My dictionary says geckos make a noise.

Did you hear anything? I like the first picture of William.

We are a family of 4, my parents met traveling and later had kids and decided that they would take us traveling around the world too! And that’s how it all started!
