Madeleine and family backpacking around the globe

Hot.Hot.Hot.

Wow! The heat is killing us! Big time. There is only one hero, and that is the air-conditioning. We had a nice time in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, where we enjoyed a river trip with some unexpected creatures and went to a museum which my mom made a big mistake about – more on that subject later. We also saw some long-houses, did some snorkelling, and swam in the ocean and pool.

Let’s start with the river cruise! My personal opinion wasn’t very positive, but I do have to say that if you like tours, this is for you. I personally find them a little slow for my liking. So, this was a 2 hour bus ride on a really bumpy rode to get to this little eating area and river. I took Dramamine, because my stomach doesn’t do very well with long car rides. Anyways, once we got there, they gave us a small plate of food and coffee. After 30 min, we got on the boat. During the trip we saw monkeys, fireflies, and we were joined by some small crocodiles, luckily they left us alone! But that was really cool!

Okay, I said my mom made a big mistake, and here it is. My mom told us that there was a cool museum just 20 minutes away (it was much longer), and that it’s not that hot outside. Oh no! SHE WAS WRONG. BIG TIME. We were getting torn apart by the sun. And when we got into the museum, it didn’t even feel air-conditioned. Luckily, there was a mini museum connected, and it was so glorious because of the air-conditioning. After we cooled down, it was time to see the long houses. They were so different to the places we live in now. Don’t worry, we got a Grab back, that’s the Malaysian version of Uber.

I just wanted to quickly say that we stayed in an Airbnb, and it was in a tall building of apartments, and it had an infinity pool outside overlooking the ocean (coolest pool ever). We were just so happy not to be sleeping with the lizards anymore!

Lastly, the snorkeling, we ended up doing it for 3 hours, and we learnt that that was way to long. But we all really enjoyed it, we swam with the fish, turtles, and even the sharks. And, no. Nobody got bitten! We enjoyed the fun activites, and we were very grateful to have a few days to relax and just catch our breath a little.

I love reading everyone’s comments, and I miss you all very much!

(And I can totally hear your voices (especially Nina!) in your writing. I hope the bugs are done eating you all (I’m NOT a fan of bites) and you continue to see and do amazing things. xoxo

  3. Madeleine, how can you not love museums? They are one of my favorite things!

Try to stay cool, we had a couple days of warm weather but now it’s cold again. Not too cold, but cold enough Max and I can enjoy the electric blanket.

Lots of love to all of you!

We are a family of 4, my parents met traveling and later had kids and decided that they would take us traveling around the world too! And that’s how it all started!
