Madeleine and family backpacking around the globe

George Town, Penang

Everybody said that George Town is “so awesome!” “It’s amazing!” I mean, it was…..but the heat was so awful! Someone working at the hotel we stayed at told us that he got an alert on his phone which said that it was so hot that if you spent too long outside it could become dangerous. Apparently it was 35-38 Celsius, or 90-100 degrees f. Besides the heat, it was really enjoyable. I will say that it was a very touristy place compared to the next post that will come in a few days.

I enjoyed the food in the cold cafés, the Science Center, getting lost in a mall, the funicular, and the power of air-con.

First, the cafés. They all had amazing air-con, but our favorite was the Loong Fong Cafe! They had delicious waffle bites, Nasi Lemak, and noodle soup. If you have no clue what any of those are, then head over to the food diary and check it out!

Nasi Lemak, a traditional breakfast dish here.
Coconut filling, does not look appealing but it really is!

Next, the Science Center and mall. This is a bit of a long story but I’ll shorten it up for you. We found a big mall online, that had a well rated science center. But what we hadn’t realized until we got there, was that there were around 3-4 mall units connected together by sky bridges. The Science place was actually very easy to find. It was so interactive for kids! But to be honest, you didn’t learn much, more than anything you played fun games. This is where it gets interesting! We had to exit out of the other end, so we didn’t know where we were. We wondered around an 80 story building for 30 or so minutes. We went down weird turns and twists until my mom demanded my dad to ask someone how to get out. First we asked a security guard, but she didn’t speak English. Finally, this nice cars sales lady told us where to go, and how to escape that grimy mall.

Lastly, the funicular. The best part is that I am reading an amazing book called ‘The Pearl Of Penang’. It was set in the 1930’s and my main character lives in George town and went on this ride! Anyways, we were really lucky because we came so early, therefore there was no waiting line! We took it up and hopped off looking out to a beautiful site of the city. It was also much cooler because of elevation. We went on a glass wrap around sky bridge, and took some beautiful photos. We also went on some lovely walking trails.

Everything was great, until…. we turned the corner and my dad’s affection for dogs almost got us killed!(not literally, I’m just exaggerating a bit) He saw these two adorable dogs, and took his phone out to take a picture. He scared the dogs so much that the dogs started growing and barking. We were terrified, one dog went running up the hill after a while of scaring us, and the other one slowly followed. We quickly crept up the hill.

Mean one on the right, calm one on the left.

Here is  a video of the ride down and some other things!

We did actually see one!

I hope you enjoyed this post, get ready for the next, it’s very much in the middle of nowhere!😐

Miss you all very much!

We are a family of 4, my parents met traveling and later had kids and decided that they would take us traveling around the world too! And that’s how it all started!
